I PUT YOU TO SLEEP

My heart is numb, and the pain is deep,
Even now I miss you lying at my feet,

You roam free now in a wondrous place,
No pain, no sorrow.... timeless solace,

I cry for you though I sent you away,
Your time had come and you could not stay.

To see you in pain, I could not bear,
A pain that I could not heal nor share.

In your soft sorrowful eyes I felt I could see,
That you wanted to depart with dignity.

But still, one question repeats anew,
Did I do it for me; or did I do it for you?
