My Heart Bleeds

Oh, God! Can’t thou stop my heart from bleeding?

Pricked by a thousand arrows, Afflicted by innumerable arrows.

My heart bleeds when I hear the cry of an infant,

Deserted by its mother to the mercy of destiny.

My heart bleeds when I see a man

Rejoicing at the fall of his brethren,

Unmindful of the downtrodden and afflicted.

My heart bleeds when I see the massacre

Of innocent men and women.

My heart bleeds when I see the soil of this holy land

Stained with the blood of innocent people.

My heart bleeds when I see violence

In all its ugly manifestations on earth.

My heart bleeds when I hear the outcry of people

Who neither have a morsel to feed nor a home to live.

My heart bleeds when I listen to the woes

Of the millions who are the carriers of AIDS.

Oh! Has humanity been lost in the wilderness of sins?

Alas, Has it died a death--un-mourned?

or has it been lost in the gloom of this world?
