A LINE IN THE SAND

I drew a line in the sand
So that I could watch from afar
The rising tide, the pounding surf
But not touch those passions that throbbed aloud.

I drew a line in the sand
To stop the waves from crashing in
To stall that sweep of emotions and pain
To walk calmly along the shore.

I drew that line in the sand
Telling myself that it was a wall.
Drew it deep and long
To stop myself from wading in the song

The waves beckoned, the winds called
But I watched standing behind my wall
Foolishly secure in my faith
That the line was strong and could keep me safe.

The tidal upsweep rose and rose
Came crashing down with a tremendous force
Enthralled, I stood behind my line
Wanting to soak the spray, just see the tide

With a roar the waters came pouring forth
And swept at my feet with an urgency and more
Shocked, I searched wildly for my line
And found that it had been wiped clean and fine.

Surrounded by the fury and froth of passion
I stood bemused, shaken and pale
Soaked to the skin, drenched in its force
The line, had vanished and left me unprotected and alone.
