A FILTHY PARADISE

The portal had opened, a paradise within,
Away from the noise, the disturbing din,
I stood in amazement, looking all around,
What was this magical place I had found?
No cries of victims, loud in despair,
No longer was I drenched in sooty air,
No fields of wild flowers laid bare,
Covered with weeds and thorns that ensnare.

Instead lay ahead in this fantasy world,
The beauteous wonder of Nature unfurled,
Green hills that reached the heavens it seemed,
While through the valley a river streamed,
Placed and peaceful, the water crystal clear,
A Utopian world rid of sorrow and fear,
On the banks were flowers of every hue,
A thousand colours shining in the dew,
Amongst them, chirping birds, grazing herds,
A magnificence inexpressible in words.

Joy engulfed me as I drank these sights,
For I was in a safe haven, a respite
From the darkness that lay beyond,
That waited outside this cranial pond.
I stood hypnotized by the beauty around,
A second stretched for aeons I found,
The mind from all it's shackles freeing,
The paradise pervading the essence of my being.

But the spell was broken by a clap of thunder,
Of omens of evil, it was a harbinger,
For with the swiftness of a bird of prey,
The Devil returned with the world of today,
The beauty, the splendour, was soon erased,
Instead stood a world where evil was glazed,
Humility detested, selfishness praised,
A world where fires of hatred blazed.
Gone was my dream, never to return,
Replaced by a landscape that burned,
From afar, I could hear a hungry child moan,
Even in my fancy, seeds of filth were sown.
