IN EGO-LAND

A trip I took to ego-land
Whose baleful landscape
Strewn with rocks and sand
Lured many to false sense of escape.

Thro' the menacing gate
Enter I with much anxiety
For dwellers there hate
To appease plebeian curiosity.

I espy one aflame with wisdom
Whose bloated self bespeaks
Of authority in his fiefdom
Lesser minds he scorns to tweak.

His stern gaze makes me cower
Yet he evokes deep deference
By sheer play of mental power
He had me caged in reverence.

A little distance away
Flap the wings of conceit
Shallow wits display
An intellect full of deceit.

With blustering airs
Such puny mind howls
From his loathsome lairs
His blighted self scowls.

Look there! Solemn of face
Burned in life's chamber
Lost in a bleak maze
A lone soul on the camber.

"No wrong I can do or think
No mistakes will I concede."
Into the pit his thoughts sink
Into false pride they recede.

Blithely other shadows glide
In varying postures and moods
Some to impress, some to slide
Along aimless paths, into dark woods.

Forbidding yet beautiful
Obnoxious yet dazzling
Entrancing yet sinful
'Tis a place so puzzling.
