TO MY DAUGHTER

Dear daughter, there are a few things I always wanted to tell.
But you being so small and innocent; I didn't have heart to dispel
Your sweet notions of love, affection, faith and gratitude
But now you must learn - that nothing is pure and absolute.

You are so trusting- sure your future is safe in my hands.
But my darling, never ever in life trust anyone with your future at stake.
As it happens, the world is biased-you are already labeled as weaker ones.
Guard your freedom zealously - not make a present of it to even the loved ones.

At the door of adolescence- you are still more a child than a woman
But you should know right now-you are entering an unfriendly domain.
Too soon the gaiety will give place to harsh realities which face you must
You will be bewildered, at a loss- when asked to make compromises unjust.

My dear, I want you to be strong and confident that day
Stand tall and make your decisions- don't be swayed by come what may.
I may or may not be alive that day to stand in support of you
Be sure of my blessings, when ignoring consequences, to your own choice you
stick to.

If you want to celebrate womanhood-strive for development all around
It is not that you are less than a boy-but the chauvinists will need
knocking to come round.
I know the path I want you to go, is risky and dangerous
Yet, I want my daughter to be liberated and courageous.
