ASCENSION

Sometimes I notice the fragrance of musk
in the air just before dusk, and I mourn my lost chance
to join the lovers who dance
like figures in an antique tapestry. Come stay with me!
Sometimes I hear a voice so pure, I swear
I'd follow it anywhere, be willing to endure
any trial if I was sure
of learning the speaker's identity. Come search with me!
Sometimes I see a face that almost but
never quite appears. It flutters past my mind's eye; small
glimmers of light strike the wall
between you and me and Divinity. Come climb with me!
Sometimes I feel a joy so great that my
spirit sighs; it takes me higher than the earthly state
of sound. I stand at the gate
and I hold the key to infinity. Come sing with me!
Sometimes I have a heart that swells with love
and a soul that soars above this life where sorrow dwells.
Light dances and crystal bells
chime in heavenly choreography. Come fly with me!
Sometimes I am immersed in oneness; no
sensation at all, the flow of life in stasis-done,
as ages and moments run
together in the spontaneous Now. Come pray with me!
