OH…..A GIRL!!

When a child was conceived,

A cause to rejoice indeed,

And the pleasure-filled voices shrieked,

Those of the kith and kinsmen,

Who said with ease,

“God bless you with a son.”

Oh! What plans were made,

A room for the baby to stay,

Whose wall should be blue,

Clothes bright and cute,

But none of them frocks,

Whose laces and frills would be talked.

A party planned in advance,

For a ritual to be performed,

To christen the new born,

As dainty images of God were floated in the ponds,

But the names sounded Mohit, Armaan and Jai,

And not Mohini, Amrita and Jaya.

The reason, this coveted child was indeed a boy,

And its female predecessor was made to cry,

As she was thrown for her unfavorable gender,

Which shouldered a host of duties to render,

As believed, the dowry the parents would have to send,

Struck they’d be by poverty then.

Thus, another case of female infanticide came to light,

And after the girl had died,

Her soul continued to ponder on the reason why,

Throughout her flight,

To the Heavens Devine,

As to why she was made to suffer this plight.
