WHO THOUGHT UP LOVE ANYWAY?

"Don’t you think love is pointless?"

I said to my heart.

"A moth is drawn to a flame

But when it’s united with its love

It is ash.

"A mother labours for her child

Stays up all night

Feeding, nurturing, being there

Giving herself

And yet what does her love leave her with

When her nestling

Fly away?

"Friends share and care

Their secrets, their passions

Their feelings, their lives

And yet when an ill-wisher sows

The seeds of misunderstanding,

Who is to say that their love

Isn’t as fragile

As chinaware?

"Romantic love simply happens:

Attraction, sparks

Electricity, thunder

But ‘lightning flashes allow no time for the eye to focus’

For when the skies clear

And Reality dawns

Can this fickle love repair

A crushed heart?

"Love is pointless."

I frowned at my heart.

My heart snickered at me.

"And yet," it said.

"Would you be able to LIVE

Without it?"
