School-leaver

As the zero-hour approaches

I can feel my impatience grow

Liberty is just a few hurdles away

Liberty that I crave to know.

Seconds tick by, I draw inches closer

My mind excited, nervous and tense

My wings ache to stretch themselves

The world outside seems noisy and dense.

My heart beats giddily at every step

Exhilaration at its height

Familiar sounds all die away

The gates open –there’s a blinding light.

I look around with thirsty eyes

The world is waiting for me

I stretch my wings and fly off gleefully

At last, I am free.
