THE DAY THE PINES FELL The mighty Pines had stood for ages Sentinels, appearing proud and tall; For years the deer had safe haven When summer evolved into fall. Bluejays would shriek out warnings, As we'd walk along the wood's path; Being shaded from the noon-day sun, Protected from nature's sudden wrath.
Then one day "man" entered the scene.. Decided the trees should no longer stay; Brought in men with cutters and splitters, Nothing can, from my mind, erase that day.
One by one, those mighty trees were felled, Each sound of its fall piercing my heart; Nestlings were likewise sacrificed, as. Terrified, the animals scurried to depart.
Nothing could drown out the noise Of the machinery and falling trees; Until the last tree had fallen, and Nature was brought to its knees.
They destroyed in just hours, what Took indefinite years to grow; Conscience didn't play a part in What God started many years ago.
Morning came with its eery silence, No sounds of crows, squirrels, nor the bird; But it was the most deafening silence that I, in my lifetime thus far, have ever heard. ~Twilah~
