MASQUERADE
Why are we always trying to be what we are not? Why aren’t we happy with what we are? Why the make up and masks and clothes that don’t fit? Why the inane banter that doesn’t come from the heart? Why the accent from a place we haven’t even been to? Why are we dropping names of those who have made it? Why are we trying to sound like they’re our bosom pals? Why are we looking to see if anyone has noticed? Why are we driving a car that we cannot afford? Why the fake labels on locally bought bags? Why are we dipping all our silver jewelry in gold? Why the surgery to tuck in a body that’s sagged? Why are we partying with people that we don’t even like? Why are we dancing with people whom we don’t even know? Why are we forcing bitter drinks down our poor throats? Why are we muffling screams from our tortured souls? Why are we always trying to be what we’re not? Why aren’t we happy with what we are?
