Epilogue
The hush after the final ring
A premonition of an impending tragedy
As I listened to the resolute and sullen silence
Unspoken dialogue passed between us
I knew
Catastrophe laid waiting
Culmination of an inconclusive love.
You were never good at disguising emotions
The moment after the final offer
and reception
Unshed tears fall
And as solitude descends on me
The present sinking slowly into the past
I knew
Love had died
Throttled to death?
Thin wails of protests
Customary rituals
Explicit terms
No arguments
No dissuasions
No disappointments
No noises of regrets
No alibis
No betrayals...
For the moment was inevitable
As I stopped living in a trance
So much discovered
So much recovered
Not a wasted expedition
As I smiled at the memory
Now - a past
I have to begin anew
In the present
Relearn to be alone
Carry the burden of life alone
life after experiencing death
The joint purpose that was
must now be my own
Desire and love have to depart
For time is short
Pleasure has to be rationed.
