AN EXCHANGE

Love me for what I am
You ask. Before you do
My heart has long been yours
Unconditionally,
Freely given.. I hope
As freely accepted.

And yet, because I am
Myself, imperfect I,
I know I trouble you
With my own doubts and fears,
Wanting reassurance
That your love is still mine.

And I must ask you, too,
Love me, understand me,
Forgive me, and accept
The one whose love is yours
Totally. Hold me close
To your heart, forever.
