WOULD YOU BELIEVE?

Would you believe
If I told you
That I left you
Because I loved you?
Hoping the shadow of hate
Which is my fate
Wouldn’t visit your gate.

  On this chessboard of life
Chequered with strife
Didn’t wish for you
To be a pawn
In the cruel hands
Of mine enemy sworn
Who’d use you as shield
Or a missile
In life’s battlefield

  That’s why I stayed aloof
Even while under one roof
Giving my detractors proof
That I didn’t care
Knowing well
That to you
I couldn’t dare
To bare
The secrets of my pain
Lest it put a strain
On the umbilical cord
Once severed
By the cruel sword
Of fate
Of hate.
