SONNET ON COMPOSING

Some poets scrawp their crusted trowels through clay,
                            Producing clotted lumps,  while others take
                            Fine instruments to work in filigree
                            Of gold or silver,  setting stones to make
                            A piece of jewellery,  each element
                            Related in a smooth quantivalence,
                            Becoming whole and wholly coherent,
                            Which through wholeness acquires  significance.

                            A composition must communicate
                            By concrete form of utter clarity;
                            The matter and the manner made to meet--
                            Diversity held in a unity.
                              As Wallace Stevens in his work has shown:
                              ''A poem,   and a poem's  style are one''.
