SHE WAITED

She waited

With expectant eyes

At the dilapidated railway station.

Though the train

Was overdue

Yet there was no clue.

I stumbled upon the platform then

And rising saw her waiting there

All done up.

Eyeshade above the eyelids

A dash of color on the lips

Hair let loose

Like the hangman’s noose.

I looked at her

And she at me.

She sank her quizzical glance in me.

My outstretched hand stressed my need.

She counted my fingers five

And willingly took my hand for life.

The train charged in.

The train charged out.

And then in a dark and dreary forest

Where no help could ever come near

The train broke down as if for life.
