THE WAY OF THE HEART

Every time I tried to turn and flee,
You held on, didn’t let me go,
At every crossing that I reached,
A quiet waiting you did show.
It wasn’t that I didn’t want you,
But what I understood not,
My learning and my desire,
In my mind they so fought.
Cold reason said, “No”, the heart refused
To heed its scornful reprove,
Divided between logic and instinct,
The passion did not remove.
God knows, to make you hate me,
I have tried a thousand ways,
But every time you raised me,
And stood me up with grace.
I come again to try once more,
This chance at affection to take,
Silencing sanity its high pitched shriek,
To mar or yet to make.
