Did I Leave You?

Did I leave you?
No, I just took myself away
Like one takes away the dishes
After the meal is done.
It wasn’t you I left behind
But that part of me
Which will tarnish with time
Like a sepia-toned photo
In the album of your mind.
Maybe I can’t face
The decaying façade of my image
That you framed with love
Neither would stand the test of time
So I said goodbye.
Along the way
Though my back was rigid
My mind bore holes in my skull
Looking back.
I planted memories
With each and every footstep.
Did I leave you?
I just took myself away
And took with me
That which was never mine
Sorrow, from your tearful eyes.
