Riverside

Quietly in the early morning dawn

I creep upon your bank

and watch you flow gently by

marvel in the uniform ebb and flow

of your waters as they gurgle past

like they were centuries before

and will be, for centuries more...

As the sun rises steadily before me

I reflect upon your calm surface

how many pebbles must've been thrown

and yet...

just a momentary ripple

a break in stride, a twinge of pain

but soon enough, calm once again...

Why can't I be the same?

why do I hurt with each stone

why does it open me to the bone

why can't I flow smooth over the cliff

why does blood spill

where jagged edges touch

why do my own whirlpools suck me in

why can't I overcome, why can't I win?

Its almost nightfall now

yet I find no answers to my why

just their mocking ebb and flow

as your waters flow gently by

I look at you beseechingly

speak to me once before you go to sea

give me my answer and set me free.
