Haunting Refrains

Outside oh dark of night
chilled by the winter's wind,
yours is a blanket of snow,
Inside, the darkness beside me,
one empty pillow lay,
my tear drops falling in place,
are haunting refrains of love
warmed and once so close;
Oh hollow house how loud,
the quiet sounds !
ticking clock! forever reminding
the merriment and happiness
you once filled,
alas no one to jest nor tease a smile
upon this saddened face;
Blessed sleep be my comfort
for awhile,
there kind dreams are made,
my love doth keep me warm;
Too soon the dawn appears,
and dreams quickly fade
thus I awaken to a day,
I no longer can bear,
for my heart will no longer wait;
my pride be gone, Pray God! ,
May I not be too late.
