FORSAKEN

I heard it in the air tonight,
Your call was slight and weak.
To my listening ears it came,
And stood so dumb, so meek.

In angers heat I did ignore,
The language that you sought.
The very words that you gave to me,
I knew, but gave no thought.

The way in which your need did speak,
My hackles they did rise.
Instead of fighting mind and heart,
Your wound you can’t disguise.

Now when you reached for me,
I abandoned you I feel.
I felt the trembling of your hands,
I made my heart of steel.

In truth, you were there for me,
When I did hurt so bad.
You, and another one,
Gave me reason to be glad.

Like an orphaned child who learns,
Never to love again.
I knew that feeling once before,
Now I know the pain.

It took its time to heal the scar,
A welt is all it shows.
The mark is livid, crimson now,
As this feeling grows.
