AN UPROOTED TREE
An uprooted tree
lies in the street.
The one
who promised everyone
with a refuge
is today itself in need.
People come,
see the fallen one
and no one
seems to be concerned.
They don't remember;
those sizzling noons of June,
those shivering nights of new moons
and
those sultry days of pouring monsoons
when,
they were running helter-skelter,
it was the tree
who gave them the shelter.
Today,
when in the aftermath
of storm and rain
his generous framework
lays slain,
there is no one
who would even stop
to look for a while
let alone to bestow on him
a precious drop of life.
In this 'progressive' society
each personality
is hidden beneath
umpteen layers of conceit
and
on the assay of fulfillment,
estimates the value of the being.
