The Great Divide
When its not dawn yet
and you're curled
into a corner of the mat
where you were hurled
waking with a start
to begin the trudge for wood
cough as you start the fire
smoke tearing at your throat
as he departs eating his fill
leaving you with weak gruel
did a wan smile touch your lips?

When you gave of
yourself with all your heart
and joy blinded you
to choices that tear you apart
a scalpel leaving its scar
being stoned to death
or the screams of labour
while child-birth ravaged
your young body so
did you realize how painful love is?

When you worked
the barren fields all day
toil to make two ends meet
for a secure stay
forgiving the drunken abuse
loneliness your only companion
while he wandered
hidden behind your veil
in a loveless marriage
did you really think
the rules would be the same?
