Love Unfettered

Birds alight on his withered hands
And eat from his outstretched palms
They have no fear, they are not caged
They do not care if he is seeking alms.

People throng the town square
Armed with bird seeds, they entice
Stretching their palms as he does
And beseech the birds, in vain, from the skies.

Trust is not earned by a momentary wish
Nor can it be purchased, mandated or willed
It is the freedom to fly at their choice and pleasure
Which draws them to him, their minds calmed and  stilled.

I am not yet so evolved to fully understand
The concept of love without possession
Your radiant smile, laughter and words
Make the desire to belong an obsession.

If I set you free, will you come back to me?
It is this trepidation I conceal in vain
In my fear I hold you so near
And hope you understand my yearning and pain.
