Deterred In Flight
I sat at the windowsill
Quietly and still,
Felt the waning summer's force
Which had nourished the flowers' glow.
Sensed the autumn heralding its coming,
Painting the green leaves in colourful hues,
Witnessed departing summer
Shyly kissing the arriving fall.
A riotous display holding me in thrall.
Suddenly, out of nowhere,
A red cardinal in flight
Crashed against the windowpane.
Stunned and dazed, it lay folded on the grass
Like a discarded, broken doll.
When I took the bird in my hands,
It weakly flapped its wings.
I let it hobble on the lawn
Until it recovered from the shock
And flew to the nearest branch.
How often, we too, crash against unseen barriers,
Perceived to be clear, but concealing a veiled wall,
Cheated in love,
Betrayed in trust,
Or in friendship deceived,
We too fall stunned and shocked,
When we thought nothing would go wrong
With our soaring, carefree flight.
Like the bird,
We too learn to painfully hobble and then fly
Perhaps, only to crash once again.
Until, alas, some of us are too weary of flying at all.
