WHILE  YOU  SLEPT

The stillness of the forest was broken

with staccato bursts of gunshot

the poachers closed in quickly

hungry to see what they got

some claimed the tusks, others the horn

the carcasses skinned and shared

young or old, none were spared

and another herd vanished

while you slept.....

Rotting corpses were immersed

amidst chanting of esoteric hymns

bedraggled, tired souls waded in

seeking atonement for their sins

and the deity sailed to her abode

at the end of another noisy festival

each factory added its own chemical

and another river died

while you slept.....

Their saws hacked at her branches

till they broke with a wrenching sound

mute before the timber mafia

the majestic pine crashed to the ground

where birds sang and the sun shone through

it lay where it once stood

sacrificed for it's humble wood

yet another tree fell

while you slept....

One solitary voice dared protest

as the list of shame grew longer

the voice was heard by a few

and their chorus grew stronger

care for your environment their guiding light

bound to preserve and nourish

to see man and nature flourish

slowly, a crusade began

while you slept.....
