The Ship And The Sea
Last night
love engulfed me
as the night the world...
slowly at first -
appearing on the horizon
gradually coming closer, teasingly
mind,
like the birds returning to their nests at twilight,
twittering music
heart,
like the workers returning home at the day's end,
rushing hither and thither, unable to hide its excitement
the first hint of the warm breath
slowly turns warmer, until there's only one breath
like the many hues of the evening sky gradually taking on
the colour of night
two pairs of lips part
two tongues dart
only to become one.......
the heaving that seemed so distant
can now be felt
the softness mingles with hardness
the earth spreads its arms to welcome the night
and the night, with its arms spread,
engulfs earth within itself
heights explore depths
like a ship swaying to the tune of the sea
the sea.....which hides such unexplored depths
the sea...which has so many mysteries hidden within itself
the sea...which has engulfed so many ships within itself since time immemorial
and the ship.....always believing he has mastered the sea
because the sea has allowed it him to ride her waves?
but last night the sea, calm and composed, let the ship ride her waves
gentle and heaving ever so slightly
the moon comes up on the horizon
and the tides start setting in
slowly the tempo increases
the sea discards that serene composure
the waves become larger....and larger.....and larger
tossing the ship
through the crests and the troughs,
the ship holds on....
he cannot let go of the sea
having reached such blissful heights riding her waves
the sea comes into her full bloom
trying to enclose all of the ship
in the deepest of her depths
and the ship goes into such depths
only to emerge on the surface
(for a gasp of air? to taste the salty perspiration of the sea?)
and go into the depths of the sea once again.
the effortless effort goes on
the sea enclosing the ship within itself
the ship reaching into the depths of the sea
the sea doesn't know that the ship wants the sea to enclose him
the ship doesn't know that the sea wants him to reach deep into her depths
slowly the tide shifts......the sea relaxes, the ship surrenders
and everything is calm in the world
the ship is spent of all his energy
the sea is satiated with the pleasure of fulfillment
until it's daylight once more
the birds are making music once more
but the tune is different
the workers are rushing about again
but there's a new energy in the rush
as if they know that at the end of the day
the welcome journey back beckons them
when night once more will engulf the earth in her arms...gently, softly
when the sea will have the ship ride her again
and another night of heaving, tossing and struggling
to reach that blissful calm once more.
