RIVER I
wanted to cross the river today The
river that I had crossed One
hundred time's before, The
Bridge was there as usual, Wood
white and strong, spanning, Comfortable
and safe, well built by human craft But
I could not cross the river today, The
river had changed, nature strong, Nature
wild, had altered the sweet stream, And
brought her brother from afar, Where
she had bubbled gurgled in the sun, Her
brother roared and swept and laughed, Covering
meadows and fields that felt so sure, Land
become lake bottom, grass grazed by fish Where
cows had gorged before and sheep nibbled, And
the bridge stood still proud and strong, but
washed and covered by the water, prouder, stronger, I
wanted to cross the river today . ~ Edward Radfall ~
