Opsail Maine 2000

The streets were alive with people, cordoned off to protect and contain,
Concession stands, each claiming their right to be seen and heard;
The sound of an occasional fog horn could be heard in the distance,
Beckoning the crowds to come.. we obediently obey without a word.

As though mesmerized, we all migrate toward the waterfront, not
Realizing the pull was tightening its grip on us; being drawn
By the sight of a flotilla of twenty four ships entering the harbor,
So majestic and proud, lowering their sails to speed things along.

One by one, they enter.. in all their majesty, the mighty Liberted
Leading the way. Children were lifted to their daddy's shoulders;
Not to miss this historic sight that was heralded by cannons on shore,
Thousands of people line the harbor now, their eyes misty with tears.

The Coastguard ship.. The Eagle.. is next to make its appearance,
Young officers and enlisted men and women observe the crowd;
One by one, the ships came to rest in their assigned slips.. the crew
Tending the sails, preparing for the many tours that would be allowed.

The harbor was filled with many ships.. different in style and size,
Each one welcoming the tall ships and the crews in their midst;
Camaraderie was perceived among the ships crew and the public,
Some posing for photos, sharing a smile.. or presenting the ships.

The fireworks that followed much later that night, seemed to pale
In comparison of the event that had earlier taken place;
An extra treat for all.. the beautiful ship, the Scotia Prince,
Was seen sailing past, her lights outlining her beauty and grace.

The days quickly passed.. until the day finally came, when
The mighty ships had to leave...one by one. The harbor
Seemed empty now, and a quietness naturally ascended,
But the people had received the thrill they had come for.

The morning we left, the fog came rolling in from the water,
As if to say the show was over, and now the curtain is drawn;
A fitting end to the days of celebration.. the music and laughter,
We all go home now, to relive the memories that've been born.
