ISLANDS

Islands in the mist, green sea supporting,

mist and sea welding, to produce soft opalescence,

hard green and white floats above,

surf breaking against firm cliffs,

home for gulls and puffins, sea pinks and ferns,

bent low by winds, burnt by summer sun,

bathed in all year rain, washed in salt and spray,

accessible but not, existing at the fringe, on the edge,

a boundary that is part but not part of our land.
