HAPPY NEW YEAR

Once Christmas is past,
The year gets cold
And we get ready
To discard the old
With clinking glasses
And inebriated cheer
We dance into the night
To greet yet another year
We look back wistfully
At the year that departs
Looking forward with hope
As the new annum starts
Making new resolutions
Wondering how long they'll last
And if things will be different
Have we learnt lessons from the past?
A fresh page to write upon
In the new chapter of life
A new millennium for mankind
Will it too be full of strife?
What is this new day?
That some people have made
To start all over again
Is it just another parade?
One third of mankind
Will go to sleep tonight
Hungry and yet hungry again
In the New Year's first light
Those guns won't be silent
As terror walks towards our door
And I pray there won't be blood
On the dance floor
But why be morbid
As we celebrate this eve
Let's just enjoy the moment
In our world of make-believe
Let's look towards the dawn
And forget our fear
Let's hope and pray
It'll be a Happy New Year
