GOING UP IN SMOKE

This year has come to an end
Like the neglected cigarette stub
In the ashtray -- still aflame
Smoke rising from it’s ashes…
Only to dissipate in the cold air
Like the hopes and horrors
Of this year past
And long forgotten resolutions...
Like the cigarette that reduced life
So did this passing year
Surreptitiously taking away each minute
And throwing it away
Into some black hole
Soon we will light another
Take the first few deep drags
Savour its taste
Blow smoke rings of hope
That will dissipate once more
Another year, another space within the ring
