The Coming Of Winter

The earth shudders, its violent movements go staunchly un-noticed,
Initiated by the winter chill now spreading o'er the submissive land;
The nakedness of the many trees, now standing alone and defenseless,
Icy fingers spreading its grip, reminiscent of death's final cold hand.

Defenseless they stand, receiving the brunt of winter's unrelenting force,
The weaker ones bowing as if in reverence to its staunch oppressor;
While the mighty warriors of the forest, among them the oak and pine
Stand proud and tall, accepting their fate with courage and fervor.

Once again, the changing of the season is thrust unmercifully upon us,
And once again smoke will billow forth, mixing with the cold night air;
The fireplaces will be stoked, mesmerizing the captive occupants within,
Creating a haven during the cold winter months, as a beast within his lair.

Come, old man winter, bring your awaiting victims to their knees,
"Til the months slip away, and your deadening grip weakens with aging;
When your final days are numbered and you are forced to melt away,
Signifying defeat at the hand of your foe..the coming of gentle Spring.
