C'est la vie

They warned me of your beguiling ways
I paid no heed to them, of course,
Smitten and besotted as I was
I was determined to stay the course.

The way you smiled and flicked your hair
Was enough to make me wing high
Head over heels in love I was
I adored the way you looked up and sighed.

The way you laughed and looked at me
I thought was a sign of one who dotes.
You took a fancy to me, I was sure
'Cause you called daily and wrote those lovely notes.

You always sounded so concerned

And chided me when I did not phone
When we went out for an evening together
Your eyes were riveted on me alone

The day you whispered and held my hand
I stayed all night on cloud nine
I thought I was dreaming and dared not think
That one day you would be mine.

And then, suddenly out of nowhere
The bolt came from the blue
You didn't phone, you wouldn't meet
Nor would you give me a clue.

When fear and grief gripped my soul
My friends said they were right
'Don't you see she changed the signal red?
You should stop at the traffic light!'

The final blow descended when
I found you with another in place of me
And when I gathered courage and confronted
You smiled, and said, 'My friend, C'est la vie!'
