A Point of View

Search for happiness is overrated,
As though nothing else really matters.
If that be the case, then why on earth
The world is in such shambles and tatters?

Hurt and misery are more our lot,
A constant factor in our lives
Sadness, the only promise life does keep,
Not sun and sand and ever blue skies.

Nothing focuses the mind more clearly
Than pain, grief and sorrow.
It is of this poets will sing forever
With passion, today and tomorrow.

When lovers remember, recount and tell,
Not many talk only of heaven.
They do not always recall milk and honey,
But more on anguish of parting they dwell.

If sweethearts do not pine and grieve
And life, indeed, be a merry place,
Then deep emotions will never be plumbed
Nor odes sung in their praise.

Happiness is just one emotion,
Just as anger, gratefulness and courage.
To seek it alone in exclusion
Is missing the point after a certain age.

Ask the hearts that have walked through fire
And emerged with cleansed souls.
They have more to tell about life and its meaning
Than those with lesser goals.
