A Lesson Of Life

Sitting at my desk one day, and glancing outside
My window, the movement of a bird caught my eye;
On further glance I saw a little mourning dove
Sitting by herself, alone, on the porch railing nearby.

She seemed so lost....and apparently alone now,
Accepting the loneliness as her apparent fate;
This mourning dove continues to struggle
To survive this cruel world...without her mate.

Her graceful head occasionally throws quick glances,
As if she might see him magically re-appear;
In this life, for her, there will be no other,
It will always be him.. the one she held so dear.

As I study this amazing creature, the mourning dove,
There is much that can observantly be learned,
About faithfulness and devotion to another, and
How these things have to constantly be earned.

To think that she will spend the rest of her days
Seeking food, fending for her safety quite alone;
For to the mourning dove, there will be only one mate,
Until her life here on earth is eventually done.

So I watched and reflected, learning a lesson of life,
Not noticing the tear slipping down my cheek now;
This lesson was taught to me today, in the quietness
Of my room, not merely by accident, somehow I know.
