4-letter word

When I was young
I believed in it
And chased it
Finding it
In a smile
In soft brown eyes
In held hands
Or tender groping kisses
And inexperienced caresses
It was there
In the air
Everywhere
But it was a butterfly
Clothed in rainbow
Only flitting
Just as fleeting
Impossible to hold
But I still believed in it
Still believed I could find it
And give it a permanent home
But in this twilight glow
I don't see it any more
Only its rotting flesh
Or the skeletons exposed
Broken edifices built for it
Now exposed like broken eggs
Lying on the floor
As messy, as dissatisfying
Like the other four-letter word
