THE UMBILICAL CORD

I emerged from my mother's womb
Got thumped on the back and raised
a big hue and cry with great aplomb!

A nurse gathered my frail body with
gloved hands while another cut
the umbilical cord with a soft smile

What a painful moment that was!
I cried my tiny lungs out for the warmth
and security of my mothers frame...

Today, as I lie in pain on this hospital bed
Needles taped to my arm, cant move my head
A thought crosses my mind.....

Who said that my umbilical cord was
cut decades ago when I was born
to my beloved Mom?

It seems no one can sever the cord and
separate us from our mother's bond
For when in pain our lips bear only her name!

A baby's cord is never cut my friend
for even when we have grown old and frail
our bond with our Mother follows life's trail.
