THE RETURN OF DARKNESS

The fire of fervour
Flew high on eagle wings,
Reached the zenith,
A momentary joy,
Only to ebb away
As dusk quietly enveloped it,
Smothered it without warning.
Though I was ready for the retreat,
It still suffocates,
The darkness returns,
Penetrates every corner
Reminding me of its permanence,
How the enthusiastic flames
Were but a spark
The gloom will always return
To engulf.

I know the flickers will reappear,
Light the lamp of reveries,
But it will be too late,
I have seen the fire
Breathe its last sigh,
And when it relights
Another will have to stroke it,
Coax it to a blaze,
Carry the torch to high pedestal,
For I will be far away,
Drudging to my destiny,
The glow invisible,
Its warmth lost.
