SEPIA HUES

The quayside café’ beckoned us

For the wind now blew cold that eve

The place was already full and lively

As the waiter guided us to our seat

The tabled terrace had first invited

But we found the inner warmth more

And settled back in that far corner

Two new friends but who felt like old

The fare served was so delicious

I can sense its taste even as yet

You coaxed me to eat with my fingers

Assuring that ceremony need not be met

As I shared of those matters that had hurt

You gently asked to see my handwriting,

Admiringly saying, that yours was simply

The worst and only worth of hiding

Soon the candle on the table was lit

And a soft glow on us slowly spread

Chuckling, you whispered “Now you can say

We had a candle lit dinner as well”

Time flew swift, I hated to leave,

But ingrained formality made me ask

If it was too late for you, being already

Half past the tenth hour at night

Surprised, you demurred, that there be

No rush and let time simply roll by,

Making me feel as if for the moment

Time had finally come to rest for a while

The waiter hovered about, point & again

As if our pleasure was a cause for concern

When all along it was his tip and a gentle hint

It was late, could we now please move along

Those precious moments will never fade

Though with years may take on sepia hues

The kaleidoscope of colours I felt that day

My dear, will forever joyously my heart rule.
