A U T U M N A L    V A R N A

A vine with scarlet leaves all tangled through
A lilac tree in late October;  this
Made a pleasant prospect from my Varna
Balkon,  overlooking other balkons

And range of windows through which people could
Be glimpsed enjoying daily life:  a girl
At breakfast,  a man tending plants,  an old
Plump woman hanging washing out to furl

And flop upon the breeze,  the gossip of
Priatelkas*,  and several workmen in
Half-built apartments hammering as if
The world belonged to them. . . while sparrows on

The hop investigated nearby trees,
A chained dog barked,  and coloured cats sat hunched
In contemplation.  There I felt at ease
And watched,  a poem in my head new-launched.
