An
Afternoon Image

I had seen, on waking this day,
a proof of life, in the things that strife
to jerk, like limbs, in work or play,
that verve of being, a sharp knife.
And yet most awful, in quiet wonder,
at all the able things that be,
were my own thoughts, in quiet ponder,
gaping, and gaping, right thru' me.
I have seen, since starting this day,
in things that move, such force of life,
with all that drive, that falls away,
from all the world, in peace and strife.
And yet most wondrous, of quiet terrors,
in all the things I did but see,
was my own face, in icy mirrors,
staring, and staring, back at me.
