SHARDS OF A SOUL

They came across a heap of diamonds
Glittering in the sun,
A sparkling hope of tomorrow
A promise yet to come...

Discovering countless pieces of a jigsaw
They tried to make them fit
Placing them all with care
Neither knowing the picture they'd get...

Unread myriad words upon a page
They did not always express
All that sometimes needs to be said
Or where each heart might transgress...

Pointed slivers of shrapnel
She aimed her shot so sure
Piercing his heart, wounding his soul
For him there was no cure...

Stray splinters of shipwreck
Scattered against the rocks
The poet walks the shore alone
While the nightingale above mocks...
