PROSPECT FROM AN HOTEL LOUNGE

On looking out across the Oban Bay

I thought I glimpsed a lady beckoning.

In form she seemed a goddess of the sea---

So Other,  elemental,  alluring:

Ideal and unattainable.  I caught

My breath,  the vision faded but remained

Distinct in memory until it brought

A varied host of images to mind.

The ferry to the Isle of Mull now came

In view and mentally I boarded her,

And leaning from the rail gazed at the foam

Churned from her bows,  and then intently where

The goddess had appeared----but now,  no sign---

I guessed another coast was her domain.
