BETRAYAL

Silently they stood
around
As he quietly walked away
Wide eyes on expressionless face
Wondering why he didn’t stay
Trying to recall in tiny minds
All the nice things he would say
That he would be leaving them
Held them all in dismay
With heavy hearts throbbing pain
They watched him step out the gate
Should they hug him one last time
But they knew it was all too late
They never felt the hard cold floor
In the warmth of the toys he brought
Nor complain at the rotten food served
It’s normal, is what they thought
That he should ever steal their food
Was something beyond belief
But that he was no longer there
Filled their hearts with grief
In pure agony they looked at me
Their tiny hearts afire
Angry eyes then shone on me
Hard but cold like sapphire
They couldn’t see my bleeding heart
Or the thorn that pierced my soul
Or the faith he trampled upon
When from hungry mouths he stole
My own life’s plans in tatters
Tired life now a major trial
Dealing with the task on hand
And living with his betrayal
