TATTERS OF MY PRIDE

I'd ask them to go away

if I could tell the stars to hide

that I may shed the few drops I have left

of what I once called my pride.

The darkness of the night isn't enough

to hide my shameful face

the tears I have shed in shame

are lost in a thirsty earth's embrace.

I thank you for staying quiet

I thank you for your care

I thank you for looking away

from the things I cannot share.

If the sun rises to find me now

my nakedness I will hide

in a smile that is so false

like the tatters of my pride.
