I Longed To Lie Beside Her

I longed to lie beside her
To hold her in my arms
But she recited poetry
And lost me in the swarms
Of the gentle flowing iambs'
Intoxicating barms.
I longed to make love to her
For hours in the night
But I am just a mortal man
Who cannot hope to fight
The charms that enrapture her
And cradle her in flight.
So I will give her what she loves
A poet's heart and soul
And try to steal her heart away
Or perhaps at least cajole
The might that is this woman
Who can make me whole.
I'm a captured doggerel
Who perhaps should flee
To a place of greener pastures
With someone who could be
The role of lover in my arms
Instead of poetry's.
