Happy Birthday to Me

I have always had wonderfully happy birthdays

Letters, calls, gifts, good wishes

Smiling faces, happy hearts

Cakes and candles.

This is probably a first

My first not-very-happy birthday

Tensions, schemes, heartaches

Conflicts and chaos

Uncertainty.

My heart sings

And yet my soul is uneasy.

We all have a cross to bear.

I know we’ll get through.

We have to.

I have faith in God.

In myself.

In those good wishes and smiling faces

Who’ll always be there for me

Whatever happens.

I know we’ll come out

Of this murky sea of misadventures

Of this rocky road of restless nights

Of this smoky air of suspicions and doubts.

Into a clear, clean world

Of trust and security

Of happy hearts.

This is probably a first

The first big cross of my life

Which I have to bear

Unshaken

And firm.

Give me courage, oh Lord.

It is not a happy birthday.

It is a momentous one.

And I have faith

To see it through

To my next happy birthday.
