Seasonal Friend

Walking along in the scorching sun

I came upon a small appealing shady tree

With rustling leaves green and wide

And breeze whistling through it in glee

Glancing at it smiling, I walked on

But the wind wrapped itself around me

The foliage whispered and beckoned

Luring me to rest, asking for no fee

Flowers thick bloomed on its boughs

Casting a strong spell with their freshness

Heady fragrance and music flowed freely

Leaving my astonished and breathless

Knowing this was not my journey's end

And the path was long and still unclear

I paused to rest in the shadow of its magic

And from my purpose momentarily severed

The shade and perfume was mine to relish

Easing the burning in my heart and mind

Sat I awhile lost in its mesmerizing song

Forgetting what was ahead of me, or behind

Another traveler came alongside that tree

Eager to savour and drawn to its beauty

Longing to bask in its scented cool silhouette

Which to offer to all was of course, its duty

So easing myself from its enfolding freshness

I stepped out into the sun, a bit bemused, sad

For to get drenched in an aromatic trance

Is so easy after a restful recess one has had

But as I did step out of its drugging allure

Realised I that my destination still awaited me

The peace and tranquility of that tree after all

Was only seasonal, and I was on my way free
